Last Christmas, during mass, I prayed for a better new year in 2017, even though we all know that the darker days1 await us. One of the things I prayed for is to have my home state be saved from this long drought by praying for more rain to come.
Then, when January 2017 came, my prayers have been answered. The 2017 Bay Area weather decided to meet us with the rain of all types, never ending rain. Even today as I write this entry that my night is still pouring amounts of rain. For the first time in many years, we have been getting EBS2 alerts on TV, warning us of flash floods, mudslides, and more floods, especially in the coastal areas and areas near our rivers. I’ve been counting the days that we’ve had rain since the first day of the year, and then I realized that we haven’t been having as much sun as we used to, unlike last year. I don’t mind not seeing the California sun as always, especially during winters, but as a sign of these darker days to come, our skies have been very dark, gray, and gloomy, if not just wet and raining.
It makes me wonder if California has been crying all this time. After all, the darker days will be arriving soon. These endless rains and even much stronger rains to come somehow made me see that it seems that the entire state has been crying. Even the driest of our state3 have been hit by the strongest rain storms we’ve ever had in history. The Mojave Desert has been baptized by the rain for the longest time, which is pure joy for all the flora and fauna out there.
Just a few days ago, our local news reported that almost 50% of our home state is officially out of the drought because of these crazy rain storms that we’ve been having. I don’t see an end to the rain anytime soon, but as they say, when there is rain, the sun will eventually come out in the end. In short, we’ll see the sun again in no time.
Of course, it’s still winter. When it’s not raining here, the winter chill takes over the days instead. That’s why I prefer endless rain, mainly so that our days would remain warm.
Whenever I see the rain, it really makes me want to stay home, cozy up in my bed, and read a book, do some coding and website maintenance on my laptop, draw some art on paper, or even play video games. Lately, I’m more leaning towards the latter because, like many others, they bring me joy. The characters in those video games4 made me feel that I wasn’t alone and that I’m having fun with some friends. It’d be nice to have a cup of coffee or tea on the side too for that extra warmth.
This is why I dream of finally having a remote job, so I can enjoy simple rainy moments like this. Only this time, I would be working in front of the laptop, and that, I wouldn’t mind. I wouldn’t have to get out of the house just to go to work and then forgetting my umbrella in the process too. Rainy days may be gloomy, but it doesn’t have to be for everyone. When you do something that brings you joy on a gloomy rainy day, you would feel a lot more refreshed, enough that you would be ready for the day when the sun rises again.
Other than that, sleep is always a good option.
So, I have a few question for everyone who comes by for a visit. What do you do on heavy rainy days? What does the rain mean to you? Do you like rainy days or you prefer endless sunny days? Do endless rainy days make you feel that your home may be crying?
I’d like to hear your rainy day stories if you don’t mind sharing them. ????
