To commemorate my mom’s 65th birthday (9/16), I’m playing one of her favorite songs when she was still a teenager. She was 18-yrs-old when this song, It’s My Life by British rock group The Animals first released. She graduated from high school when the British Invasion wave around the world began.
After listening to this song and its lyrics, I’ve realized how kids back in the 60s seriously innovated and defined the words raw, epic and badass in rock/pop music. It’s these types of songs that influenced many alternative rock, punk rock and (in some cases) heavy metal that many of us are familiar with today.
As I listened to this song over and over again, I now couldn’t imagine that my parents listened to these types of music when they were still in their teens, considering that they think that rap, R&B, hip-hop and some of the rock music we listen to today were considered provocative.
